Better late than never: Ripples from The Speech
I meant to blog about this closer to The Obama Speech to school children, but… (you know how it is).
The teacher who blogs at Class Antics asked her 9th grade students to write letters of response to Obama.
08:33 pm – “Miss, My Shit is TOUCHING!”
A letter one of my students wrote in response to Obama’s back-to-school speech that we watched today in class. She was right, it was touching, I had to step out for a second because I teared up a little bit.
Dear President Barack Obama,
I am 15 years old. I’m in the 10th grade. While I was in class I heard your speech and I was really amazed because all of those words you said were true and now it’s like I can feel free to do anything I want to do….
Go to the site to read the rest of this letter and others.
I can’t help but wonder if the people who opposed the speech so vehemently understand the connection that so many students of color feel to this man. Or, maybe they do.
I can’t help but wonder if the people who opposed the speech so vehemently have visited a so-called “failing” school recently. Ever. Understand that there are schools in this category that have no books, no library, no gymnasium, no or few working computers for student use. If they understand that these are American public schools.
I can’t help but wonder if the people who opposed the speech so vehemently even know any people of color.
